New Mitchell Gallery Location in the Works
A major refresh of the retail and restaurant offerings at MKE means that the Mitchell Gallery of Flight will move to a new location in the Airport’s concession mall in 2019.
Paradies Lagardère, which currently operates most of the retail shops at MKE, was selected for the Airport’s new retail concession program. In all, nearly two dozen restaurants (operated by HMSHost) and retail shops will be remodeled or replaced by next year, significantly enhancing the experience for the more than seven million travelers who choose MKE each year.
As part of the project, the Mitchell Gallery of Flight will move to the current site of the Milwaukee Marketplace, offering a permanent location for the aviation museum’s collection. The new space offers a similar footprint and a high-profile location across from the Miller Brewhouse and near the existing wishing well. This spot will receive more passenger traffic once Concourse E is renovated into a new international/domestic concourse.
The space currently occupied by the Gallery (along with the adjacent CNBC store) will be transformed into a Summerfest store, selling news and gift items, Summerfest-branded souvenirs and Summerfest tickets.
While the specific construction timeline has yet to be determined, the relocation is likely to occur later this year. Moving the Gallery’s exhibits, displays, and artifacts will be a significant undertaking. It’s possible that these items might be placed in temporary storage while the new Gallery space is under construction. We will work with the Airport to communicate any closures to the public.
Paradies Lagardère is making a significant capital contribution to accommodate the relocation of the Gallery and the Sijan, Lovell, and Maitland conference rooms. We owe Paradies our sincere thanks for providing funding to design our new space and to assist with our relocation.
